Day 14:  To the New Hampshire Lakes Region

Again we got going with no idea where we were going, except south. We headed down US 3 and with the consultation of a friend from the region, settled on Wolfeboro, NH in the Lakes Region. Our group decided that two nights here to really check it out would be better than nomading it again. Our on the road research led us to the Wolfeboro Inn which turned out to be just fine.

Our hotel from the previous night, the Mountain View Grand Resort, included a barn with farm animals. This was generally a place for kids to go interact with chickens, alpaca, sheep, etc. Us grownups went to check it out and had a nice visit there seeing the animals and visiting with the two women who were working there.

One of the residents of the barn.

View from a covered bridge. We came upon two of them today. Neither were drivable. One had picnic tables - and they were being used. The other was a gift shop. You see the water in this stream is brown, a product of the runoff from the big rains in the area. The water level here is a bit above normal.

Picking a good place to eat can involve luck. The name “Cheese Louise” got our attention, but Google Maps said it was closed until Thursday. But I called anyway just in case and it was open. So we went. It was a gourmet grilled cheese place. And they were very good. The back story is that around the pandemic time, three college grads had the crazy idea of getting a food truck and driving around the country selling grilled cheese. They apparently didn’t get very far, but the business was born and now have a few permanent locations.

The Strawberry Seller. This was a serious dude. A man of almost no words.

Strawberries are in season here and they were a good snack along the way.

Around July 4th and very very few fireworks stand sightings. But this was a good one.

In Wolfeboro, NH, the Yum-Yum Shop is an institution. Ice cream plus baked goods.

A comfortable and happy Yum-Yum customer

I was surprised to see a Dogwood here and this time of year. In the south they normally bloom in April and don’t like to live in cities.

Wolfeboro is on Lake Winnipesaukee, a large lake that is the center of the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. This is a typical scene.

An evening stroll in this small town led us to the park on the water and a community band playing.

We struck up a conversation with a guy who has come up here his whole life. His boat was parked nearby and he offered us a short ride on the water - and we did. It was wonderful to see the place from the water. Lots of beautiful homes, boats, etc. We were thankful for the ride!
