Day 16: Wolfeboro to Newport

We checked out in Wolfeboro and made one stop before leaving town. That was the New Hampshire Boat Museum. It is a small museum with a collection of vintage boats. The current exhibition was wooden steam driven boats that worked on the lake there. Plus general history on Lake Winnipesaukee. We then headed south, bound for Newport, RI, our last stop on this adventure.

The boat and car auction I mentioned yesterday benefits the boat museum. I liked the photo of the dressy couple driving that classic boat. The museum is small, but is packed with stuff.

We carried the “Road Food” book with us. A friend gave it to us and once again it has been very helpful and has been used several times on this trip. This place from the book didn’t sound that great at first. It was mainly a chicken tender place, and where supposedly chicken tenders started. The claim was that their tenders were actually made from the tenderloin, not pressed chicken meat. We didn’t have any other good ideas, so we went. It was great. The book tipped us off to split orders which was perfect as most tables were taking out large go boxes.

We had another just pre-trip tip to visit the Worcester Art Museum (WAM). Plus going south through Worcester to Newport helped us stay well west of the Boston metro area on a Friday afternoon.

We got to WAM with only 35 minutes until it closed, but went anyway. That still gave time to check it out and take a break from driving. We are members at the Menil Museum in Houston, which is part of NARM (North American Reciprocal Museum) and allows us free entry to many museums like we were members there. WAM was a NARM museum. By the end of the trip we visited eight NARM museums.

Stonington, CT was another place that was recommended for us to visit, so we made a brief stop there and had dinner. It is on on the water and quieter than it’s western neighbor Mystic, CT.

Stonington, CT

Dinner at Stonington on a pier with this view! After that a short drive into Newport.
