Day 8: Bar Harbor (3/3)

Today was our last full day in Bar Harbor. The weather was finally what you could call great - and all day long. We sailed again and made a couple of stops in the park that we didn’t have time for yesterday.

The woman at this post office was thrilled that we came in and bought some stamps from her and mailed a couple post cards. Stamp prices are going up in a few days, so a good reason to stock up.

More of lobster traps everywhere.

We sailed again today, this time on a large wooden four mast ship for a two hour cruise.

Crewmember Emmaline (one month on the job), signals to Captain Steve the location of lobster buoys, so he can avoid them. The lobster buoys are the floating marker of a lobster trap down below. These are all over in the waters off Maine and require focus to miss them.

Sand Beach in Acadia NP is one of the few beaches on Mt. Desert island. And this sand is made up of crushed sea shells. So it has a different feel than most beach sand. That water is in the high 50ºs, so we had no intention of getting in. But a number of crazies did go in

Bass Harbor Head Light Station. We wanted to drop in on some lighthouses, but due to the rain we hadn’t been able to do it. So this was the first. It is on the southwest side of the island. The keepers house is currently lived in by a Coast Guard person, so that couldn’t be visited.

Northeat Harbor. These two girls set up the chessboard, made three moves of pawns - and then called it done. I guess it was a stalemate.
