Day 8: St. Paul - Duluth

This relatively short drive moved from city to suburb to farms to lakes and rocky country and finally to surprising (to me) Duluth. We stayed in the old Saint Paul Hotel in St. Paul, which was great. Real slow, but they said weekends were picking up a lot. A visit to the huge cathedral in St. Paul found it to be closed (of course!), but then we accidentally found a great neighborhood of beautiful old homes just behind it. Duluth was larger, had a bigger downtown and a lot more people (and traffic) than I thought it might. It was great to drive over the hill and see the city, port and Lake Superior.

View of Lake Superior from the back of our hotel in Duluth - “Fitgers”. It included several restaurants, a brewery, a bookstore and other shops. It is an old historic hotel and is dog friendly too. First hotel I’ve been to with a regular metal key in a long time. Our room also looked out onto the lake.

Cultural difference observation made by MB. In Minnesota we observed that a “California Burger” is pretty much a regular hamburger all the way. In our neck of the woods, a California burger pretty much guarantees avocado and white cheese…
