Day 4: St. Louis to West Baden Springs/French Lick, IN

We explored around St. Louis a bit, especially checking out Forest Park, but we really only had a few hours. We tried St. Louis BBQ and hit the jackpot at Adams BBQ. Ice cream followed. Then we re-supplied with some food and gas, and headed east across southern Illinois and Indiana farm country to the Baden Springs Hotel. I hadn’t been to St. Louis in about 25 years, and even then was limited to the downtown area. Like Memphis I enjoyed the visit and should come back again.

These ambulance chasing guys are for sure a boon to the advertising business, especially the billboards. They have been everywhere on my journey. I liked this angle with the chicken car in front.

I thought this gentleman deserved a spot in the photoblog. St. Louis.

Adam’s Bar-B-Que in St. Louis. The owner asked how we found them - and the answer was Google Maps. We had several with good reviews to choose from but picked Adams. Good thing too, as the ribs were incredible. He said the business went from lines out the door before COVID to a fraction of that now. We wish him luck.

MB knew of Ted Drewes for frozen custard (same as ice cream to me!) so we stopped. All walkup with about 8 or more windows. It was very good. The only place you could walk into was the gift shop in a separate building. We passed on that.

This was a gem of a doughnut shop. The place was tiny and must have had about 7 people working in there. The kid up front said they were having trouble keeping doughnuts ready for all the business walking in the door. I got two for a later breakfast. No room then after BBQ & ice cream.

Now in southern Illinois farm country. One small town after another. As you can see, the corn here looked really good.

I love photographing farm buildings.

A few old motels were found on US 50. With that Cadillac and the porte-cochere , this one looked more like a funeral home.

The guy in the orange shirt was like a troll from a fairy tale who waits under the bridge. He was waiting for whoever came by at the front of this hotel.

Rural southern Indiana on Old US 50. It was indeed an old road, and Google Maps took us there. Some farms in that stretch, but a surprising number of houses.
