Day 2: Memphis

I’ve only passed through Memphis, and that time we had great ribs on Beale Street. So I passed on Beale Street this time and just checked out the city, exploring around. I stayed in the Overton Square area. I drove out (It was further out than I figured it would be) to Graceland, figuring I’d run into Elvis mania, but it was fairly quiet, no tee-shirt shops or other Elvis enterprises. I’m sure the Graceland gift shop has everyone covered. Next was a visit to the Lorraine Motel, where MLK was gunned down. I’ll save the museum for my next visit. I also drove through Overton Park and other places and took one of those city bikes for my first e-bike ride. I enjoyed my stay in Memphis.

This place wasn’t a “thing” on this day.

This was as close as I got. I just wanted to see what the Graceland scene looked like. Big complex, but pretty quiet.

The Lorraine Motel where MLK was assassinated. Integrated into it is the National Civil Rights Museum. There were a fair number of people around here, but it was very accessible.

Interesting that next door, and part of the same building with the museum, was the Lorraine Hotel.

Music art.

Street scene on my e-bike ride. The electric boost was like having a good wind at your back all the time! I really enjoyed exploring Memphis.

On my prior visit to town, I did go to Beale St. and it was great. Not time this round.

This was a “drive-by shooting”, the camera kind. There were some places that I wouldn’t be comfortable stopping and getting out, but mostly was comfortable where I went (which was a lot of places!)

Scooters are in Memphis too, but I did’t see many being used. Of course it was really hot - like everywhere else this summer.

This guitar at the old Sun Studios was hard to pass up. Nice little museum/shop inside. Although Graceland was fairly quiet, Elvis has a subtle presence all over Memphis.

There he is again!
