Day 10: St. Andrews to Quebec

We did decide to go to Quebec City driving inside Canada (and not back through Maine). The route was close to the Maine border most of the time. The first half of the route was in New Brunswick, which is officially bi-lingual, English and French, while Quebec is officially all French. New Brunswick is lightly populated and the largest cities have populations of only about 50,000 to 80,000. After breakfast and walking around St. Andrews (which was a great little town), our first stop was to the capital, Fredericton.

Per Trip Advisor, the top attraction in Fredericton was the Saturday market. It was Saturday, so we went. It wasn’t a bad market. It included tables set up outside, food trucks and a building with more permanent vendors.

Fredericton.

We’d read that Fredericton was an “art” town. This seems true as in just our short time there we parked by the Charlotte Street Arts Center, saw an art school and saw good street murals.

Fredericton.

Lots of falling ice signs around here. A foreign concept for me.

Further up the road, we found the worlds longest covered bridge. It was over the St. John River. I can say for sure that it was a very long covered bridge.

The bridge was famous enough in western New Brunswick, that there were chips named after it.

We saw the town of Grand Falls on the map, so I wondered if there was a falls there. Well there was, and I was totally surprised how big they were. There was a nice parking lot and visitor center to view them.

After a warm and muggy dinner eating outside at Edmundston, we drove north into the province of Quebec and everything became French real quick. At that restaurant we got our water right away, then nothing. Finally we ordered a drink. About then, I realized that a large number of the tables around us only had water and no food or other drinks. And two had nothing at all! We weren’t in a big hurry, but we kind of were, with a couple hours to go and the sun setting. Somehow we came out ok, and got our food before some of the others.

We got to Quebec City after dark. It was an over 6.5 hour drive total for the day, our longest yet on this trip. Didn’t see a moose.
