Day 17: Newport to Houston

We had a late flight out of nearby Providence, so we had time for a few last adventures. The weather was cooler up here (than Houston) but except for some breezy evenings, it didn't feel that different. Today was near 90º with high humidity. But the air was good. The Canadian forest fire smoke wasn’t present after about Day 3 of this trip.

The Cliff Walk. Because of timing, rain, etc., we hadn’t had a chance to walk on the Cliff Walk. It is a walking trail that goes along part of the peninsula behind many of the big houses and right along the water. We had seen people walking on the trail from two of the houses we visited. So today was our last chance. Unfortunately, it was hot and humid so we didn't walk very far, but there were a few really nice views of the sea, as you can see here. Unfortunately, due to vines and plants on the fence there was limited visability to the houses as we were passing.

As we headed north towards Providence, we came upon Newport’s beach, Easton Beach. It was a nice and decent sized beach. You can see the shore with the Cliff Walk to the right.

Easton Beach.

Further up the beach we had our last lunch (and some more lobster). We ate outside on a harbor packed with boats, of which many were sail boats. It was a club/marina and boat building/ storage place called Safe Harbor New England Boatworks.

Activity at the boatworks.

Close to where we ate lunch was a Rail Explorers location. Apparently you ride a cart on railroad tracks, with pedal power. Sort of a kids and family type activity. The Ice Cream Train was there, but wasn’t serving. We got our ice cream later.

After our lunch we drove up to to Providence and the airport. But we were a little early, so we found Roger Williams Park and closed our long trip there. The park was the large city park in Providence. It has the zoo, gardens, natural history museum and planetarium. We walked around, got some ice cream and enjoyed the carrousel. Scenes below…

Pure joy on the carrousel.

That wraps this road trip / exploration. Thanks for joining in here. Our total miles driven was 2, 177 over 19 days and across 7 US states and 2 Canadian provinces. Most all of these places we had never seen before.
