Mackinac Island to Copper Harbor, MI - Day 8

Today we left Mackinac Island after breakfast and a walk around. The ferry process worked great. Our bags and car were ready for us when we got to St. Ignace. Mackinac was good. Then we headed up into the UP with Copper Harbor as the next destination. It was about 380 miles. First we went an out of the way a bit to see the Whitefish Point lighthouse and shipwreck museum, and our first connection with Lake Superior. I like looking at lighthouses. We went up in the lighthouse here and had a great view of the point and lake. The museum was about the various shipwrecks nearby. This included the Edmund Fitzgerald that Gordon Lightfoot sang about. The beach here was different than Lake Michigan, less sand, more smooth rocks. They were beautifully colored red tints. The eastern part of the UP was not really pretty. The forests were not full or tall. Maybe it is the soil. No farms to be seen. Not too many towns. All roads are 2 lane with a 55mph speed limit, and people seemed reluctant to pass, so there would be minor stack-ups. One note, we have not seen (or got stuck behind) many big RVs - I thought there would be more. In Munising, MI we stopped for dinner - at the Moose Lodge family fish fry! That was an experience. Local color. The fish, white fish & walleye were fantastic. We didn't have a beer because you had to be a member to go into the adjacent room which was the bar. As we moved west past Marquette, the scenery got nicer. We made it to Copper Harbor just after dark. The sun set there about 9:40p. There we were still in the eastern time zone, so daylight saving time double + another half! Also we crossed 2,000 miles on the trip today.
